In 1689 to 1691, a 131 years after the warship Gabriel sunk outside Tananger at Klokkeskjær (Bell Reef), Basho wrote Road to the North. Last week, when Paul Kos was here, his wife Isabel opened the book, and read this story on that random page: “… the same night the land lord told us a story: “A temple bell is lying deep under the sea,” he said. “Once the governor of the province had divers search for it. They found it, but because it lay in an upside-down position, there was no way to pull it up”. Underneath Isabel found this haiku: “village where they ring / no bells — how do they live? / nightfall in spring”. Signs taken for wonders? There will be haiku rhytm to Neighbourhood Secrets and the finding of the five stolen church bells at the bottom of the sea?
